Bande annonce

Juliette, a young woman in search of her artistic calling, poses nude in the studio of a painter in her fifties. Over the course of three posing sessions, the painter stages Juliette’s body using a mirror, puppets and a theatrical mask. A friendship gradually forms between them : Juliette confides her doubts while the painter speaks of the complex feelings—desire mingled with aesthetic emotion—that she experiences when facing her models.

As their conversations unfold, the painter recounts a screenplay she wrote when she was Juliette’s age, The Skeleton and Sappho, in which an older painter tries to seduce a young aspiring filmmaker who eventually gives in, while filming their relationship—a film that was never completed. Disturbed by this story, Juliette questions the painter about how much of it is true. The confrontation stirs in the artist a wave of memories and reflections on time, desire and the repetition of past actions. Shaken, Juliette leaves the studio.

She will return later—but no longer the same.

This film grew out of encounters between painting and cinema, things forgotten and taken up again

When I was eighteen, I discovered Hans Baldung’s Death and the Maiden in an art magazine. Around the same time, I was drawing nudes at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière, where I also posed as a model. Ten years later, an encounter with an older woman painter inspired me to write The Skeleton and Sappho, a screenplay about the complex relationship between a painter and her model. The film was never made, and I put the screenplay aside as painting gradually came to occupy the whole of my creative life.

Twenty years later, while drawing young models, the memory resurfaced. By then, I had become the older painter myself. In 2021, I painted a series entitled The Painter and the Model, staging mirrors, masks and puppets with a young model. These paintings led me back to my earlier screenplay.

When I met the actress and model who would play Juliette, the film began to take shape. I decided to play the painter myself because I wanted to film the act of painting as it truly happens: the first mark on the canvas, the emergence of the figure, the corrections and reworkings, the tension of the gesture and the sensuality of fingers rubbing pastel or charcoal across paper. I wanted the act of painting itself to become a narrative—the story of the work’s creation.

I wanted to make a hybrid work, somewhere between fiction and documentary: a painter’s film about painters, conceived to be shown alongside the paintings that inspired it. I drew and painted during the takes, allowing the film to extend my paintings into another medium while finally bringing to life a story written twenty-five years earlier.

Through another encounter, this time with a model who was also a filmmaker, shooting was finally able to begin.
