Les grands trous bleus que font méchamment les oiseaux

(Flights and Vanitas, 2010–2011)

After painting a series of large cow carcasses in red and black in 2009, I felt the need to turn to a completely different subject: birds in flight — and to paint in blue, as a respite from red.

To draw the moment of flight, to suggest the beating of wings. With all the difficulty involved in drawing a bird in flight, and the inherent contradiction of fixing the movement of its wings on canvas.

The bird, a fish carcass on the sand, waves curling back upon themselves — my bird scenes are also vanitas.
